Continuing Education Seminars
Sherman Dixie Concrete Industries would like you to consider a "free lunch" offer. Our Technical Marketing Team would like to present to you and your civil engineering staff in the convenience of your office a "lunch and learn" program so that we may introduce the latest breakthroughs in the precast concrete pipe and product industry.
Below is a brief summary of our most popular presentations.
Proper Specifications
"Are Your Pipe Specifications Adequate?"
This presentation offers an in depth look at properly specifying both rigid and flexible pipe. The three types of pipe that are focused on are RCP vs. HDPE and CMP. It is a great reminder of things you need to think about when putting together your specification. Durability, strength and stiffness, installation, hydraulics, and cost effectiveness are all factors that must be considered when specifying a piping material. The national ASTM standards are referenced throughout the presentation, as well as their importance to the specifying community.
Presentation Time: 1 hour
Pipe Installations and Inspection
"Field Inspector"
This presentation covers several objectives. It will help you understand the differences in rigid and flexible pipe systems. The differences between the two lead to the discussion of their installation. The issue of proper inspection of new and existing culverts is addressed. The presentation goes through how to evaluate durability and structural adequacy, as well as shape and hydraulic capacity. From this, the condition of the pipe can be rated. Finally, we will show you how to document your findings. You'll be given a inspection handout that you can use to rate the field performance and condition of a pipe.
Presentation Time: 2 hours
Standard Installations
"New Bedding and Backfill Requirements for Precast Concrete Pipe"
Learn about the 4 new installation standards that replace the old "B, C & D" beddings. SIDD is the main focus of this presentation. It begins with a discussion of SIDD research and development. Then it covers some basic terminology with respect to soil types their classification, and the components of a standard installation. There are several useful things to know about SIDD designs. They are versatile, conservative, and quantifiable. The SIDD installations are explained in full detail so that you have a clear understanding of each.
Presentation Time: 1 hour.
Precast Box Culverts
"Thinking Inside the Box"
This presentation contains information about the precast box culvert manufacturing process and precast advantages over poured in place. The presentation also goes through recommendations for installation and talks about on-site assistance. It discusses new markets and possibilities for precast box culverts, which include 3-sided boxes or boxes used as detention/retention chambers.
Presentation Time: 1 hour
Precast Structure Design
"Designing with Precast in Mind"
This is a great presentation! The first part entitled "Precast Offers Variety" is a general discussion of the precast industry and what's available. It also goes over manufacturing processes and the advantages of precast. Part two is "Designing Precast Structures". It reviews the national specifications. It is an in depth look into proper horizontal and vertical design of precast structures. Minimum heights and pipe angles are key in structures design. The last part of the presentation compares the city's standards with products available from Sherman-Dixie. These are issues that everyone in Civil Engineering and the construction business needs to know.
Presentation Time: 2-3 hours
Production
"Manufacturing Precast Products"
The production of precast structures and concrete pipe is the focus of this presentation. This presentation begins by going through a brief history of concrete pipe and precast products. There are two types of mixes, wet and dry. You'll learn about the material used in the mix design, as well as the complete production process. Every step of production is discussed from the steel reinforcement to the quality control and delivery of the products, ideal for engineering students or new hires.
Presentation Time: 1 hour
3EB
"Concrete Pipe Structural Design Program"
3EB is the structural design program highlighted in this presentation. 3EB uses an indirect design method that uses the new standard installations. It is in Windows format format making it easy to use. The program uses ACPA Design Data 40 and computes the required concrete pipe strength, It is a great program but it is important to understand the calculations the program is performing.
Presentation Time: 1 hour
Hydraulics
A review of inlet and outlet control, the Manning's "n" equation and why concrete pipe has the most efficient flow characteristics with "hands on" design using the "Fields Hydraulic Calculator"
RCP from A-Z
An overview of concrete pipe related topics from production, installations, joint types, inspection and design.
